Topic: Hanami- Viewing Cherry Blossom in Japanese Art

The revered sakura, or cherry blossom, has been celebrated in landscapes, figure paintings, and prints by artists from medieval Japan to Katsushika Hokusai and beyond. In the springtime, when the cherry flowers are blooming, you are invited to embrace hanami, the traditional Japanese custom of “flower viewing,” in this guided tour of the museum’s Japanese art collections!

Docent: Dr. Yuan Liu

Yuan Liu is a neuroscientist, writer, photographer, and volunteer docent at the National Museum of Asian Art. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Peking University and Ph.D. from Basel University. Dr. Liu defines herself as a Bridge Builder. As the Chief of an International Office at NIH, she built worldwide bridges between scientific disciplines; as a docent at the Smithsonian, she is building a bridge between Pan-Asian art and its appreciation by a global audience. Since 2020 she has delivered 100 online tours and 30 cultural lectures to more than 10,000 audience globally.

一年一度的樱花节不仅是日本的盛典,如今也成为世界各地迎春的节日。樱花虽然生命短暂、转瞬即逝,她独特的美颜却在日本历代艺术家笔下灿烂永驻。刘嫄老师会向听众介绍东瀛赏樱传统的来龙去脉;华府引种樱花的一波三折;樱花生物学及世界各地赏樱指南。讲座重点将介绍日本大和绘、唐绘、浮世绘及新版画大师笔下的樱花佳作。让我们在刘老师的引领下,观樱、赏画、学史,遨游艺术海洋!

【讲员简介】

刘嫄博士:神经生物学者、写作者、摄影者、演讲者、美国国立亚洲艺术博物馆志愿讲解员。在北大分获学士、硕士学位,在瑞士巴塞尔大学获博士学位曾长期在美国国立卫生研究院任研究所国际办公室主任,多次获杰出贡献奖。她多年来读书、行路、摄影、撰文,足迹遍及六大洲五十国。其近作《畅游世界最大图书馆——美国国会图书馆》入围多个好书榜。其它中文作品散见于《书与画》、《丝路艺术》、《湖上》、《世界日报》及《世界周刊》等海内外刊物。

刘博士自许为一名铺路搭桥人:曾致力为推动南北半球多个学科国际合作铺路,现继续为促进东西各方多元文化艺术沟通搭桥。自2020年以来,她已经做了100多场博物馆线上导览和30多场文化讲座,受到来自全球数以万计人次听众的欢迎。
