About the Author and the Book
Echo Liu is a Toronto-based author who has published 52 children’s picture books, several of which can be found in Toronto Public Libraries. She has also thrown book-signing events at Indigo, Canada’s biggest bookstore. You can find Echo’s books here: www. skykypublishing.com
With great interest AND RESEARCH in psychology and education, Echo created the novel No Detours in the Black Hole based on true stories of many immigrant families: a high school girl who struggles between school life, full schedule of extracurricular activities, competitions, and high expectations from a strict mom, and a mid-aged mother who gives up a big chunk of her own life for the sake of her daughter’s future, take turns to give account of what they have experienced and thought. The tension and conflicts draw them into a depressive black hole, especially the teenage daughter.
How have they managed to come out of the black hole? What is the true meaning of children’s happiness and parental love? The book also touches areas of female empowerment, spousal relationships, and the influence of original families. Do you have any thought or experience related to the topics? Come to this online session of Book Talks, and have a thorough discussion with Echo. Everybody is welcome!
