Guest Speaker Bios
SHEN Wei
Driven by a commitment to fostering cinematic talent and diverse narratives, SHEN Wei pursued a MFA in film directing at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she recently graduated. At UCLA, she collaborated with six female directors on their MFA thesis projects as a producer. Her work is motivated by a desire to explore migration experiences and unearth the emotional truths that resonate within diverse stories. Growing up in Wuhan, China, Wei came to Canada in 2008. She holds a BBA from the University of Toronto, and had worked in the public sector before going to UCLA.
In 2018, Wei co-founded the Mulan International Film Festival in Toronto, as the Artistic Director for the platform dedicated to celebrating Chinese-language films and creators of Chinese descent. In 2019, she served as a panel advisor at the Ontario Arts Council, where she assessed grant applications and set priorities for publishing organizations.
Promise XU
Promise XU is the Co-Founder and Senior Director, Marketing & Audience at Mulan International Film Festival. You may have seen him as the host and live interpreter at many of their events.
Outside of MulanIFF, Promise works as a Senior Frontend Developer at Certn, and he previously worked on his own startups, and also as a Commercialization Officer at UHN. He has abundant experience in event planning and organization, publication management, and marketing. He holds a BBA from the University of Toronto in Management and Information Technology.
