This week we are going to have an interesting dialogue on Silicon Valley
tycoons,  and how to become or raise a technology generalist.  An engineer
and an educator , also Two thoughtful and caring fathers, will lead the
conversation. Everyone is welcome to join them, and discuss over questions
like below:

*       What is a technology generalist?  What characteristics do we usually
see in
such a person?
*       Are those characteristics innate?  Can they be cultivated?
*       What can we learn from Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates?
*       Why could these tech generalists establish themselves in their
twenties , while most entrepreneurs launched their first startups in their
middle age[1]?
*       What could be missed in our family and school education to foster
technology generalists?
*       What can we do to make up the missing part, and help ourselves
and/or our kids become a generalist?

Dawei Sun came to Canada in the year of 2000, with a computer science background.  He got involved in the field of animation design when working as a software engineer, and found himself fascinated with it.  He went to a 3year program at Seneca College, and obtained a diploma in Animation. Since then he has been working in the Animation/VFX and Game industry for over 12 years,playing different roles, such as rigging artist, character effect artist and technical director.  He is currently a senior technical director who helps build pipelines for animation and visual effects productions at Tangent Animation, a Canadian studio that created the Netflix movie “Next Gen”.  Other movies he did include “Nut Job: and “Nut Job 2” by Toonbox Entertainment, and “A Christmas Carol” by Walt Disney Pictures.  He is also a mentor for juniors who are new to the industry and the pipeline in various studios.  Dawei likes playing basketball in his spare time.  He and his wife live in Milton, with their two kids.  He enjoys accompanying them, and playing chess or Go with the 12-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy.

Update: Zoom meeting video

Since 1992 after graduation from Harbin Institute of Technology with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Shaoxuan Zhou (Joe) has played various roles in the industry: an owner of an indie architecture studio, a project manager at CallisonRTKL Shanghai, and an urban designer for a couple of architecture firms in China.  In between of those roles he spent five years travelling and living in New Zealand.   and England.  Currently Joe lives in Toronto with his wife and their  10-year-old boy, and works remotely for a firm in Shanghai as their urban design director.  He enjoys every minute at work, very happy that he can make a good living by doing something he has been passionate about for almost 30 years, i.e., to be a frontline designer, and incorporate art, history, economy, and technology to make living spaces beautiful, comfortable and sustainable, with distinct community identities.  In his spare time, Joe loves outdoor activities, going to gym, and gardening.

GRAEME LYNCH’s dream job  has been being a director since he was a teenager.  The passion led him through family pressure, initial confusions, and self-questioning in his early years.  He came to realize his dream at the age of 26.  Ever since then, Graeme has helmed over 200 episodes of television, covering both the scripted and the unscripted – drama, comedy, science fiction, documentary, and reality work.  Over his career, Graeme has received nine best-director nominations from the Canadian Academy and won the Canadian Screen Award twice.

Zicheng Qian, 24, is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at University of
Toronto, Department of Mathematics.  He finished his Doctorate degree in
Mathematics at Université Paris-sud, France in 2019, specializing in Number.
Before that he graduated from School of the Gifted Young, University of
Science and Technology of China.  When he conducts his research,
you’ll see him sitting in front of a computer or strolling around in the room,
thinking.  The most beautiful thing about mathematics is that only truth
works in its world, according to Zicheng.  No matter who you are or how
prestigious you are in this field, every mathematician is equal in front of
the provable truth; no vanity or fame can save you if you make a mistake.
So you get to be honest.

About the Lecturer

Yingfeng Zhang is an advocate for generalist education in science and technology for teenagers, college students and technology enthusiasts.  He founded QHOW Technology in Toronto in 2019, an educational hub that equips participants with knowledge of technology, business, and hands-on experience in product design and development.  Yingfeng holds a Master’s degree in Software Engineering from Shandong University, China.  Before he moved to Canada three years ago, he had worked as a science and technology educator  and consultant for over a decade, training software developer employees on cutting-edge technologies and scientific ideas, and guiding university  students to develop software products, and  helping them write and publish technology books.  He is an Honourable Contributor (2015) on Zhihu, the Chinese equivalent of Quora.  He has written more than 100 answers in the fields of education, mathematics, science, and history. He has around 170K followers on Zhihu, and his articles were saved by readers for more than 400K times.  Currently, Yingfeng is writing a book on the history of Calculus  which origin and evolution dates back to ancient Egypt and ancient Greece.

Brenda Tang immigrated to Toronto in the year 2009 from China.  She graduated from Seneca College with a financial planning diploma, and is working at CIBC at present.  Growing up in a family who runs a garment business, Brenda has shown a passion and taste for fashion since young age.  Once a fashion consultant in Toronto, Brenda loves to help people select the best choice of clothing for different occasions, making recommendations           on outfits, individual pieces, styles, colour palettes and fabrics.  She writes articles and did interviews for a local Chinese radio station to promote knowledge of trends and fashion principles in the Chinese community.
